Functional appliances are usually fitted to reduce the prominence of upper front teeth and to improve the way the jaws relate to each other. This involves two removable appliances – one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth, they alter the bite of the teeth by holding the lower jaw forwards. Functional appliances need to be worn on a full-time basis, day and night, for between 6 and 9 months. They must be removed for cleaning, swimming and contact sports. After this initial treatment period they are usually worn at night to allow the transition to the fixed braces.
Treatment Times
6 – 12 Months depending on the severity of your case
Prices – Vary according to time and difficulty
No Cost, Used as part of a Comprehensive Treatment
This is a 10 minutes appointment, where there will be a initial chat to get to know you, examine your mouth and assess your problems and your expectations from the treatment.
Once you have had the initial assessment and decide to go ahead with the treatment, we will book an appointment to have your records taken.
These include x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth. They are needed to plan your treatment and to monitor its progress and results.
After your records have been examined and a treatment plan has been designed, you will now be ready to have the braces fitted. This is usually carried out in a single appointment.
